What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology (nanotech) is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular and supramolecular scale which is defined as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers

The ideas and concepts behind nanotechnology first started with a famous talk entitled “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom” by the American physicist Richard Feynman studying undeveloped materials and controlling activities at the molecular and atomic levels, then later he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965.

Innanotechnology, not only should the smallness of the materials be taken into account, but also it should be considered that the innate properties of elements such as color, strength, and impact resistance would be improved while being at nanoscale. In fact, the existence of “basic elements” can be considered as a criterion to distinguish nanotechnology from other technologies. As a matter of fact, basic elements are the same as nano elements whose properties, while at the nanoscale, are different from the properties they manifest on larger scales.

The properties of nanomaterials or nano products:

Basically, materials should meet at least three following properties on nano scale in order to be taken into account as nanomaterials:

  • The size of nanomaterials should be less than 100 nm (100*10-9 m) in at least one dimension.
  • They should have novel properties that non-nanomaterials are deprived of (much more ratio of surface to volume, more chemically saving energy, much more density, better Electrical Control (EC), and more advanced efficiency such as targeted delivery).
  • Designing and makingthese materials should be targeted and well-constructed and they must be capable of adding and removing different agents (the other elements or complexes).
